HP LaserJet Pro P1102w Printer (CE657A#BGJ)

Quick Reliable Compatible5

I purchased this printer through a local retailer and was debating between the HP and a similarly priced wireless printer from Brother. The replacement toner cartridges are a bit more for the HP but then again they come with the drum assembly built in. This greatly reduces maintenance and potential hardware failures.

Setup:

As for setup under Windows it's a snap. Put the CD in and follow the directions.

Under Linux (I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx)) the install was easy. I visited [...] web site and downloaded the drivers. From there I just followed the directions on the web page and it works like a charm.

I've not used it with a Mac but I did note that OSX is listed on the box.

Printer quality:

As for the printer itself. It has a very small footprint on the desk when the paper trays are not extended and a small one when they are. It has excellent monochrome print quality and is very fast. As with all laser printers the ink is waterproof once it's on the paper. I'd recommend it any day of the week.

The printer's body feels solid when you handle it. The input trays are similarly solid. The output tray feels a bit light but as long as you aren't abusing the tray it'll be more than sufficient.

HP Experience:

For me HP printers are generally very reliable and always has good driver support both under Windows and Linux.More detail ...

Brother HL-2140 Personal Laser Printer

Very fast easy to set up with Mac OS X and cheap.5

I had considered purchasing a laser printer in the past but my little inkjet seemed more cost-efficient. Now that I'm into my dissertation and need to print 20+-page articles every few days - sometimes 9 or 10 at a time - the inkjet is no longer useful for my purposes. I saw this printer for very cheap at Staples and decided to go for it.

I am unsure about real-life cost-effectiveness since I've only had the printer for a few days. I am still using the starter toner that came with the printer. It has lasted through about 250 pages of full text so far. I ordered the high-yield (2500-page) toner from Staples for $61 including tax. Drum replacement looks to be about $100 every 12000 pages (every 4 toner cartridges). That says it will cost about $350 every 12000 pages or so if the printer lasts that long.

This printer is small and light and very simple. When it runs out of paper it gives the red error message. You add paper press the single button and it works again. Startup-to-print time is very quick - less than 10 seconds after flipping the power switch. I was stunned at how fast pages came out of this little thing (quicker even than the HP 2300 I have in my office). And yes the lights in my apartment dim when it prints.

I use this with a Macbook Pro over Airport Extreme (it worked! first try!)

I am confident in my purchase. (But not so confident that I waived the $15 warranty option when I purchased from Staples for $69 after rebates!)

2 caveats: this printer does not come with a USB cable (but my $3 USB 2.0 cable worked just fine.) As I said it only comes with a starter toner which is supposed to last only 250 pages (mine has lasted exactly that and no fading yet).More detail ...

Brother HL-2170W 23ppm Laser Printer with Wireless and Wired Network Interfaces

Great printer but programmed to rip you off in toner4

I bought the HL-2170W from Amazon at the beginning of 2008. I found it very easy to configure for both wired and wireless networks although I use mine on a wired connection out of convenience. I print mostly plain text and the quality is very good.

I have but two complaints:

First the paper comes out slightly curled but this is a fact of life for a printer this size.

Second Brother has programmed the printer such that when its thinks the toner is empty it stops working. This happened to me when I was printing some important documents. I did some internet searches and examined the toner cartridge. There is a clear plastic circle at each end of the toner cartridge. The printer shines a light through to see how full the toner is. Simply cover one of them with a piece of opaque tape and the printer will think that the toner is full. I've already gotten 1500+ pages out of the starter toner that was "empty" at 983 with no difference in printed quality.More detail ...

Great and fast printer5

I had an HP 5L which was a stinkin' pile of.... Printed great but it had the dreaded feeder problems all the 5L/6L models had.

This one seems to work great starts up fast seems well made.

I use a Belkin 10 ft USB cable with no problems with the length. Installation was easy.

Just a tip for installation with no instructions included: do not connect the USB cable until the software on the CD prompts it. i.e. connect the power get all the packing material out and shake the cartidge then put the CD in the PC.More detail ...

Canon D340 Digital Copier Laser Printer

A Great Value5

I selected this copier/printer based on price features and the Canon name. I felt like I got "Oh such a deal" at the time I bought mine in Sept.08. It was painless to set up: install the software; plug in the USB cable (not provided) when prompted and click and Voila! I set it up as a shared printer and it is now the main printer in our 4 PC home network.

- Its quick

- Makes clear clean copies

- Not as quiet as some when printing but definitely not loud

- Top sheet feeder works well even for multiple sheets

- Toner cartridge was a breeze to install

- Enters and exits its "sleep" mode flawlessly even from another PC on the network

- Comes with a FULL TONER CARTRIDGE not a starter. For those who do not know about this: many new printers especially when being sold at LOW prices are sold with a toner cartridge that's only good for a few hundred copies at most. Just enough to get you started on day one and to give you time to go buy a "real" toner cartridge. This is often how the mfg's will move more units by selling them at super-low prices knowing they will make their profits on you returning for toner.

With the rebate I couldn't pass this up although if I were paying full retail I would have chosen one that also scans to the PC. This one DOES NOT. It is only a printer and copier. I would also consider one that has a Print server and NIC built-in IF I could also connect directly for scanning.

I would recommend this printer.More detail ...

Brother DCP-7040 Laser Multi-Function Copier with Auto Document Feeder

Great Printer Excellent Value5

Pros: Very fast print speed auto document feeder quiet works great with Mac OSX Leopard Vista compatible separate (and cost effective) drum and toner cartridges low price.

Cons: None especially at this price.

I have this printer connected to my Apple Airport Extreme Gigabit base station and it works like a charm for printing from all of my Windows and Mac machines. Brother has made it extremely easy to install the drivers (and they've even already updated themselves on the Mac) so the entire setup was under 5 minutes. I love the fact that I can also use this printer as a standalone photocopier--and cheaply since it's a laser printer. Of course network scanning would be a plus but that's not the printer's fault. If I need to scan docs or pictures (rarely would I) then I can just connect it directly to my Mac and use it from there. But 99.9% of the time I just print documents over the network and make photocopies. Great printer!

Samsung ML-2851ND Network-Ready Monochrome Laser Printer

Great all around laser printer5

So far this laser has been great. i was looking for a laser that printed on both sides and network ready. The samsung filled the bill at a very attractive price (can be has for $160 with instant rebate). It was a breeze to setup on Mac OS 10.5 as a network printer. Bonjour found it and just use the Samsung driver. Also since it has native postscript support you can use the Generic Postscript Driver with it as well. Works fine under 10.5 that way as well. Printing speed is awesome and printing on both sides is great. the smaller form factor is great too.More detail ...

HP P1505 Laserjet Printer

This is an excellent printer when used as it is intended5

Every year we rotate out about 250 printers of a total around 700 printers. That means we are on a three year rotation schedule. The batch going out this year is some pitiful Brother printers that are only one and one-half to two years old. The ones we are keeping past their rotation time are some HP1012 and 1022 printers that have performed flawlessly. Their replacements are these 1505s.

These printers are simply well-suited to their jobs. They are shared at every installation where we use them. They have been fault free so far and most likely will be if they mirror our experience over the last 20 years with HP printers. They are not network printers or meant for heavy production use. For that you have to expect to spend a few more dollars.

Based on our experience here with these printers I bought one for home and it is performing flawlessly.

I would recommend this printer to anyone who needs an everyday reliable easy on the combustibles printer.More detail ...

HP LaserJet P2055dn Printer Monochrome

Excellent printer - download the latest firmware set the printer to Quiet Mode & create a new default printing shortcut5

Update: If your printer hangs on some print jobs as mine did go to the HP website and download the March 2010 version of the firmware (or a more recent version if available). The new firmware seems to have solved this problem. Also it's now possible to buy 3rd party refilled cartridges. On two occasions I have bought the cheapest cartridge I could find on the Internet and both have worked fine with quality indistinguishable from HP's expensive cartridges. Finally since I never print graphics my comments apply to text-only printing.

When I switched to a new computer running Vista x64 I was forced to replace my HP Laserjet 5P because HP failed to provide a driver that worked competently with the 64-bit operating system. Based on the second comment to this review HP apparently subsequently fixed the nonfunctional 5P x64 driver after Vista had been out for more than a year.

I chose the P2055dn because of auto-duplexing and the standard 128MB of RAM. I was initially disappointed by the poor print quality and noise of the printer with the factory default settings. After digging into the clunky digital-only manual and much trial and error I created new HP Printing Shortcuts for 1-sided and 2-sided documents with ProRes quality instead of the default FastRes quality and I set the default Printing Shortcut to be my new 1-sided definition.

I also set the printer to Quiet Mode. To set the Quiet Mode press the down arrow on the printer several times until you reach System Setup. Push the OK button then toggle down to Quiet Mode with the down arrow. Press OK twice then press the carriage return key to go back to Ready.

After these changes the printer runs slower but the print quality is excellent and the noise level is similar to that of the 5P. I also turned off the aggravating low toner reminders that are worse than spam email.More detail ...

Brother HL-5340D High Speed Laser Printer with Duplex

Great Value but a Small Problem3

Pros: Fast and easy installation; very speedy printing; print quality very good for text; high capacity toner cartridges available (compatible cartridges are reasonably priced).

Cons: Although Brother added a "straight through paper path" apparently for the purpose of dealing with criticisms of a previous model that envelopes and thicker media were crinkled or somewhat rolled the straight through paper path does not solve the envelope problem. The crinkling of envelopes occurs because the intake feed roller presses the envelope too tightly causing the envelope to billow as it passes and the latter part of the envelope is unavoidably crinkled.

Conclusion: This is a great value for a user who does not need to print uncrinkled envelopes with this printer. This printer remains useful to me because I have another printer that handles envelopes well.More detail ...

HP P2035N LaserJet Printer Monochrome

Great printer5

This is a great little printer. First page out in 7-8 seconds and after that a page every two seconds. It is loud but only while printing. After that a fan runs for about 30 seconds and then shuts down (I returned a Brother 2170 because the fan would run for 15-30 minutes after printing a single page). Installation was a snap. The printer also comes with a regular toner cartridge rather than a "starter" cartridge. Highly recommended.More detail ...

HP LaserJet P1006 Printer

Excellent Printer... Needs a Driver Update!4

I love this printer I bought it on sale over the weekend for under $100 (couldn't resist a laser printer at that price!). I probably printed about 700 pages this weekend one of the perks of being a Grad student I suppose.

The Positives

-Prints quickly and great font quality

-The printer is SMALL smaller than my injet.

-Works great with XP and Vista (sorry No Mac to test on)

The Con

-This printer won't work with my wireless print server. The reason given is that the driver doesn't support it at this time. My workaround for the time being is to share the printer from the desktop in my office since I do most of my printing from my laptop in another room.

Hopefully that driver or a firmware upgrade to the print server (whichever comes first) comes out soon! Otherwise this is an incredible laser printer for the price!

On a side note many people in discussion forums have complained about the high cost per sheet for a laser printer (about 4 cents a page) it is still far lower than any inkjet AND the printer just came out as far as I've seen Laser cartridges (at least here on Amazon) tend to fall in price by a few dollars after the product has been out for 6 or more months. I don't see this changing for this printer as well.More detail ...

Brother HL-5370DW Laser Printer with Wireless Networking and Duplex

Excellent printer overall4

This little boy is excellent. And you can't beat it for the price too. Also extremely easy to set up.

I am coming from an HP LaserJet also 30 papers per minute. So I was comparing it to the HP when I shopped.

My HP while it served me good was not as sharp black as the Brother is. I like the print results from the Brother much better. Plus the Brother have settings whether you're printing text only graphics general or office documents in addition you can choose "manual" and tweak the settings yourself to your liking. I also like that the size of the printer is pretty small.

The HP was a little faster from sleep mode (like 8 seconds) while the Brother 5370 takes approx. 14 seconds. Not a biggie. The processor was faster in the HP but 99% of the time you won't notice the difference. Once it starts printing it spits out papers like crazy. Very fast. One important note though: The fast 32 ppm is only if you are printing in 600 dpi mode. If you need the higher quality 1200 dpi mode print speed will be down by half! But there again 99% of the time the 600 dpi is more than enough. Some higher quality graphics may require 1200 dpi though.

Printing envelopes thru the multi-purpose paper tray is very good and they're not getting curled (like many old Brothers did) as long as you open the rear output tray. It can not print thru the regular printing area (if you do it will still print but envelopes will get wrinkled). I miss the HP in that area. It's much less cumbersome.

The printer is quite noisy. But most fast laser printers are noisy.

The duplexer worked beautifully. You just select "Duplex" or "Booklet" and the printer does the rest. Very good job with that.

I did not use the wireless networking but from the manual it seems to be a little complicated. Also from the manual is the following: "...Although the printer can be used in both wired & wireless network only ONE of the connections methods can be used at a time..." So keep that in mind if you want to use both.

I would suggest the following improvements if Brother is interested to listen:

- Make it quieter;

- Add a little high-quality display instead of all the lamps (also miss from my HP - all cheap inkjet have'em today!);

- If out of paper it should beep so I know to add paper (optional - not everyone will like beeps);

- Enable the multi-purpose paper tray to be opened with one hand (like my HP) not force me to use both hands.

Overall though it is a pleasure to use. Highly recommended.

**UPDATE**

I contacted Brother to help me setup wireless network. I must say I am amazed at the support I got. I can't recall if I ever had such a good experience with any other company! No waiting knowledgeable staff and helped me in less than minutes! And it works like a charm!More detail ...
